Hepatectomy or liver resection is the medical term for an operation where your entire or part of your liver is removed. If you have a piece of your liver removed, your liver may grow back to some of its former size. A liver transplant would be necessary after a total hepatectomy. An operation to remove a piece of your liver is referred to as a hepatectomy, sometimes known as a liver resection. You can have up to two thirds of your liver removed as long as the remaining portion is healthy. If you suffer from liver disease, you might need to have a smaller chunk removed. The liver can regenerate itself. If your remaining liver is healthy, it will grow to be the same size as before.
