Gall bladder surgery, also known as cholecystectomy, is a surgical procedure that removes the gallbladder. It is usually done when gallstones, which are hard pigments that form in the gallbladder and cause pain and discomfort, form. The gall bladder is a small bag that sits beneath the liver on the right side of the abdomen, roughly the shape and size of a pear. Its primary function is to collect and concentrate bile produced by the liver. After eating, bile is released from the gallbladder, which aids digestion. Bile enters the small intestine via the common bile ducts (CBD). Gallstones are solid deposits that form in the gallbladder. These stones form when cholesterol and pigments in bile combine to form hard particles.
