Colon cancer is cancer that starts in the large intestine (colon). The colon is the last section of the digestive tract. Colon cancer most commonly affects older adults, but it can strike anyone at any age. Polyps, which are small, noncancerous (benign) clumps of cells that form on the inside of the colon, are the most common starting point. Some of these polyps can develop into colon cancer over time. Polyps can be tiny and cause few, if any, symptoms. As a result, doctors advise regular screening tests to help prevent colon cancer by detecting and removing polyps before they develop into cancer. Many treatments are available to help control colon cancer, including surgery, radiation therapy, and drug treatments such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
